CBD is generally classified as a Schedule 4 substance, although certain low-dose products that meet specific requirements may fall under Schedule 0. THC remains a Schedule 6 substance, subject to limited exemptions relating to industrial applications, very low concentrations and private adult use.
SAHPRA also confirmed that no CBD- or THC-containing medicines have currently been registered by the Authority. Access to cannabis-related products for medicinal purposes must therefore continue to follow the Medicines and Related Substances Act, applicable schedules and SAHPRA guidelines.
This update reinforces the importance of regulated, medically guided access and clear quality standards as South Africa’s medical cannabis industry develops
