International Shift Could Support Further Medical Cannabis Research

April 23, 20262

The United States Department of Justice and Drug Enforcement Administration placed FDA-approved cannabis medicines and certain products operating under qualifying state medical cannabis licences into Schedule III.

The decision does not legalise all forms of cannabis at federal level. However, it represents a significant change in how regulated medical cannabis products are recognised within the United States.

A broader administrative process is also underway to consider moving cannabis more generally from Schedule I to Schedule III.
The development could make it easier for researchers to study the safety, effectiveness and appropriate clinical use of cannabis-based treatments. It may also provide healthcare professionals with stronger evidence to guide responsible prescribing and patient care.

International regulatory changes such as this may influence how other countries approach medical cannabis research, product development and patient access in the future
